If it were me, I'd go for the heavier duty transmission.
Assuming you plan on keeping the H2 for a long time, it'll pay for itself over time. It's not as if you only drive down the road, you tow as well.

I can see this turning into a "pay me now, or pay me later" scenario over a longer period of time.

I'm in the same boat as you, fwiw, probably worse. I can't find any competent mechanic, locally. I hear about "deals" people get, but I run into the same issue as you. $850 is awesome, but if it's not local to you (no offense to MixManSC in the slightest), it's not a real solution. I'd have to pay the same here, if that means anything. I'd rather have it fixed once than to go back every so many years because you're wearing out your transmission. That's just make take.

I spoke with a shop this morning . they offer me a regular for 1250 and the upgrade for about 400 more
he said I only have to pay for the HD parts as no more labor is involved he dont understand why other shops charge more
I think is fair . they also have good online reviews.
Hd parts will included a converter . bands and the clutch. maybe I'm forgetting something
is there any point to pay special attention

There's this option from Tampa who will ship the beefed up manufactured tranny to your shop of choice. No core charge but they will want the old one back.

H2Miami Skip the chrome pan if you go that route. The cheap chinese pan is a leak waiting to happen.

I got this answer about the upgrades from street smart

► Oversize PR valves utilized to restore hydraulic integrity
► TCC control valve, TCC regulator valve, and Actuator Feed Valve updated to address common wear problems.
► 1-2 Accumulator Pistons, upgraded to aluminum, replace the OE plastic pistons that can cause premature clutch failure.
► Tru-Flat stator qualification and machining process.
► Sun Shells updated to the latest, stronger, and more durable design, eliminating common OE failures.
► High Energy 2-4 band installed to increase durability over the OE design.
► High Energy 3-4 clutch pack, upgraded from 6 to 7 clutches to increase durability and torque capacity.
► Remanufactured pump, with new line bore bushings to eliminate leaks and provide superior flow and durability.
► Remanufactured valve body, with complete system correction and recalibration kit, improves pressure control and shift quality.
► Remanufactured and improved torque converter tested for leaks, concentricity, and balance. Upgrades exceed OE requirements and eliminate the possibilities of front seal leaks, premature bushing wear, and vibration.
► All new, bushings installed in key locations to improve internal fluid flow control and fluid pressures.
► Complete system correction and recalibration kit installed to address several OE flaws. Modifications include updates to servos, the PR system, and valve body accumulators.
► Heavy-duty recalibration kit installed to reduce slippage and increase durability.
► Complete road simulation using a dynamometer testing program called C.A.R.S. (Computer Aided Road Simulation). Every transmission is cold and hot tested before shipment.
