Default transfer case grinding

I have a 01' h1 with 40k miles. I just bought it and are not familiar with them at all.
When I stop and put it in neutral I can pull the transfer gear selector back to 4lo without much trouble. When I try to switch back to 4reg or 4hi it wants to grind! If I turn off the engine the selector moves again without much trouble, I start it and everything is back to normal.
I am affraid to transfer from reg to 4hi until I talk this over with the forum so I have assurance everything is ok.
Please offer some help with my troubles so I dont break any parts,

Scott

that is normal. it does not have a clutching system to dis engage the intermediate shaft in the transfer case so it will always grind when coming out of low lock.

Tranny in neutral and push the t case lever from low lock to high or high lock. It will grind sometimes but that is normal.
