Default Transfer Case Breakage

While off-roading in the Sierra's just north of Bishop, CA, my transfer case started to make a horrible "chunking" noise. I was pulling a good grade at the time.

I was feeling fortunate that it happened when it did and made it off the mountain okay unassisted. Once I put it back into high range, the problem did not come back. I babied it back home to LA (55MPH sucks!). It took the dealer some time to locate the issue, but they eventually found it:

I am now convinced that the manual 5-speed transmission may be beefy enough for what I put my truck through!

It is good to get all the quirks out now!

It also served as a reminder to purchase the extended warranty.

I see what your original problem is. You bought an 06 from a sellingdealer with the number of 666. Now I'm not superstisous buuut.
I'm not surprised it was fixed under warrenty since the Hummer is advertised as a capable offroad vehicle rite from the dealer. It has offroad tips in the owners manual.

OMG! I never noticed that before. Good thing I didn't pick it up a day early . . . then the pickup date would have been 6-6-06!

As far as off-road tips . . . I think I have it covered. I grew-up in the Sierras and actually started driving the mountains at the age of thirteen. Thanks for the tip though. Even experts can learn something new.
