Trailblazer electric fan clutch on an I5 H3
I'm looking for an alternate solution to increase power and fuel economy and not use an electric fan. I've read electric fan complaints with inadequate cooling and making too much noise. I know the trailblazers have an electric clutch for their radiator fan and it looks similar to our thermal clutch. I can design the circuitry that reads the ECT and the AC enable to electrically engage the clutch. I just don't know if this would mechanically fit our fan or perhaps use the entire trailblazer fan assembly. Does anyone know if the trailblazer electric fan clutch will fit the I5 H3?
According to the Hayden site, the trailblazer electric clutch will fit the bolt on the water pump (36 mm hex, M30x1.5mm right). The fan mounting location is a little different. I'm checking if the H3 and the Trailblazer fans are the same diameter.
Still haven't found the trailblazer fan size. However, this may not be a good idea. Early trailblazers had problems with this clutch. The new version supposedly fix the problem. The clutch has a connector that remains stationary which seems like a potential wear item, and this connector exits from the area in the center of the fan not the side near the engine. The clutch has an internal hall sensor to detect speed and a coil to control a valve position to control the coupling from the fluid. The PCM sends a PWM signal through a relay to the coil to control speed. The used clutch/fan assemblies are about $200.
This was probably a good idea gone bad. GM probably should have just used an efan for the trailblazer.
