Default Today's Hummer visit...

Well, it didn't go too well today. Didn't get what I was expecting on the trade in, which means I will have to wait for the old bonus check before I can afford enough to put down to get the payments I would need.

The "smart buy" is still an affordable option, but I really didn't want to do a lease as i feel yourthrowing money away down the road, especially if you want to buy itin the end.

Looks like I will have to wait another month at this point which really sucks!

Van, the wait will be worth it even though it may suck. You are correct about buy versus lease in the long term. Time will fly by and you will be sitting in the new truck. I waited 5 months formy 06 H3 and then almost 4 months for my new Alpha.

Hang in there Van. Even though the next month will seem like 3 months it will be worth the wait.

Leasing first and then buying is often cheaper.

My previous minivan was a 2003 Ford Windstar SE. (mid trim level,...alloys, CD changer, capains chairs in second row, rear A/C and controls, etc)

Total of the 36 lease payments (with the sales taxbacked out)was $11,411.

The buyout was just over $8,200.

Total would have been$19,600....for a car that had a sticker price of $32,000.

Lease is almost always cheaper. Really easy to get out of too (if you end up wanting that).

I'll have to look to see what the buyout is tomorrow, to know if the lease-then buy works out well in the H3's case.

Leasing is always more expensive in the long term. Duckstu, got up at a reasonable hour today and don't believe your numbers. No one is going to sell you a 32k van for 19.5k except your mother. Not even if you wanted to buy it.

I had it in the contract. The residual was just over $8K. I swear.

But I did forget one thing. I paid $1,000 up front cash, which Ford matched,...which reduced the cap cost. So actually it would have cost me $1,000 more than that,....or $20,600.

I liked the vehicle,..but the dealers were crap.I would have bought it out and gave it to my sister for her familly,..or kept it. But I had such a bad taste in my mouth from the dealers around,..I gave it back to them and tried my best to buy a non-Ford and American. Ended up with the H3.

I love the Edge though. I may leae one from Toledo Ohio. (only 40 min away).

American car companies are desperate to move vehicles. Most are subsidized pretty heavy and can be gotten for a good price.

I am paying too much for mine. I put nothing down on a 27 mo lease and am paying $342 plus tax. They had them for under $300 a month later in the year (2006). I got mine back in mid '06,..and they were selling well then. They're down 30% or something now in sales volume. I'd have brutalized them if that was the case then. I'd get one now for less then $300 a month guaranteed. Mine has auto trans, chrome package, splash guards, chrome wheels, 6 disk changer/XM radio, towing package, diming/compass mirror, remote start, etc

So I'll have paid a total of $9,271 to GMAC (and $556 in taxes) for it when my 27 month lease is up. Sticker was $30,800 or something. So I'll check tomorrow to see if my buyout is less than $21,500. The ones I can find on the net seem to be in the $15,000 range.
Update. My buyout is $26,215. So in this case,..it doesn;t pay to lease first then buy. It would cost me $35,486 to lease it and then buy it. For a car that had a sticker of $30,537 (plus splash guards and remote start) (of course that alsoincludes 27 months worth of interest, and the lease inception fee).

The interest would be $4,050 if it were 6% (I don;t know what current purchase interest is with GMAC). So removing that from the $35,486 gets me $31,436. Still, that makes it $600 more expensive to lease then buy. Of course it does give me the freedom to just hand them the keys if I want something different, without having to try to sell the current vehicle, or taking a $1,500 hit when trading it in.
