Default Tire Pressure Question

Hi everyone,

Two questions...

I changed the tires from the stock 265s to some 285/75R16 BFG A/Ts. What would be the correct tire pressure that should be in these? The door says 30psi for the 265s, but the tire shop that put them on looks like they inflated them to around 40-42psi.

The second question is, now that it cooled down it is throwing off my Low Tire Pressure light. I just checked and all the tires are at about 40psi. It goes off once the tires get a little warmed up. How can I either reset the alert so it doesn't come on or if I do need to drop them to around 30psi, how can I recalibrate it other than taking it to a tire shop?

Thanks so much in advance!

Tim

The 285's that come stock on the Adventure/Offroad Pkgs. are according to the sticker, suppose to be inflated to 35 lbs. I normally run 38 psi. I don't think your low tire pressure indicator will come on if the pressure is too high. Confirm with another gauge that they are indeed at 40 lbs.

Thanks. Yeah I did confirm with the gauge at the gas station. I know they replaced a sensor when they did the tires and then recalibrated everything. Is it possible that they recalibrated it to 40-42 so if it dips below that it throws it off.

They said something like they put it in a learning mode and I had to drive around for a day and it learned the correct tire pressure they set it at. Does that sound right?

What they did was a relearn on your TPMS. The chance is very very remote that they recalibrated. The Low Tire indicator should go out shortly after the relearn. Mine has gone out from about a mile up to 7 miles. Although I have never heard of it happening before, the calibration of the system could be off. I would air them to 35 psi and drive around a while and see what happens. Check the air pressure cold if you can. Good Luck

Have you thought that you could have another dead sensor?

They were installed at the same time and the battery life is the same for all 4 (5 on an early 06). Heck, did you check your spare? Wonder if it has a metal valve stem? The TPM system can only read 4 sensors at a time and if the spare has one to and the tire monkeys didn't refresh the system properly that could also be your issue.

If that were the case, why does it always seem to go away once you drive the truck a little and the tires heat up and the pressure goes up? Wouldn't it just always throw the code and never go off if there were an issue with it?

So reduced the tire pressure down to 35psi. Truck is definitely riding better now. I'm just going to have to take it over to Discount Tire to figure out the Low Pressure warning issue.

I have another question though...what is the difference between lt285/75r16 122/119R versus lt285/75r16 126/123Q? I noticed they put one tire on that was a 122/119R and it has a max psi of 80 versus 60 or 65 for all the others.

If you had a bad sensor or it wasn't relearned properly you would likely get SERVTPMS on you DIC and not the low tire pressure indicator. I assume all the sensors are factory original. This is the first time this issue has crossed the forum. Let us know what you find out. Good Luck

You have to check tire pressure COLD. COLD means truck has not moved in 3 to 4 hours, preferably in the morning or evening. If you drive to the gas station to check PSI, that ain't gonna work. Buy a tire gauge, inflate all tires to exactly 38PSI COLD.
