Strange Speedometer
Hey they other day I headed out to townin my 03 H2. I glanced down at the speedometer and noticed that indicated that I was going about 80 mph. This was certainly wrong. when I came to a stop sign the needle dropped down to 20mph and stopped. as I took off again the needle started to move up again as if it was starting from zero. When I cut the motor off it drops back down to about 20 mph. Anybody have a clue what could cause this? No warning lights come on and the truck is very well taken care of.
thanks for any replies,
thanks for any replies,
I hear that is a common problem, tho' mine has not done it yet. I think you need a rebuilt cluster but am not 100%sure. You might check with Hummer because there were some Chevy truck models that had a recal for the same problem.
Hmm. I'll call and see if there is a recall on it, but I was able to get it back working correctly. It was a simple thing to do although I really don't think that it will provide a perm. cure. Here is what I did. With the ignition off. I I clicked though each stage of starting, then started the motor. The cluster does a quick wiggle of the needles and and the speedo needle dropped down to about 20 mph. I repeated this about 3 times and each time needle dropped a lilttle more until I got down to zero. Even when it was displaying the wrong speed, the needle would still move in normal motion, the only issue was that it did not start from zero. So if was moving at 20 mph and the needle started at 40 mph. I would just do the math and pretend that 40 was really zero. This is not an issue that my truck has constantly. This is only the 2nd time in 5 years. I hope this little bit of info will help others if they encounter this situation. Thank you for everyone who has read this, I love this site and the members have helped me understand my Hummers better.
I have had the same problem on my 03 Chevy pickup for about 3 years now. GM said they would fix it if it had less than 75,000 miles on it. I have 120,000. It comes and goes. Sometimes it stays stuck on 120 and sometimes all of the gages get peged over to the right even the gas gage. They have to replace the whole cluster which on the truck runs about $600.
Guys,
i had mine fixed at Sacramento Speedometer (916-371-5873)for around $200.00. I took the cluster out of the truck and dropped it of to them and about two hours later it was done. They replaced all of the motors for this price. the good thing about doing it this way is you dont have to hassle with the certifacation of milage on a recondition swap from one o ebay or junk yard.
