Default Stereo compatibility? - single CD vs MP3 capable

I'm taking the H3 in for some cosmetic warranty work tomorrow (rust on trailer wiring harness, etc) and one of the issues is that the paint on several of my radio buttons is wearing off (I must have acidic skin oil or something ...).

Anyway, it's a simple single CD player (non-Monsoon), and I was hoping to take the opportunity to upgrade to the MP3 compatible CD player (I'd pay the difference between the 2 head units). Now, I was hoping that it's a direct swap (same wiring, etc). Does anybody know if it's possible or does the MP3 compatible version require the whole Monsoon setup?

Thanks.

Not even the Monsoon set up will have Mp3 compatibility. you just need to change the head unit. and the people who sell/do them ( if its a proper auto store) will know what will work with your car and wont. usualy they even install it for like $20 bucks. =)

Monsoon system in ours and no external input function. The upgrade will pretty much be a plug and play though. Nothing major.

The 6-disc is .wav files only, I would have loved MP3 capability too!

We're on our second radio because of the button paint issue, it's a known problem with the radio used in the H3. I have newer and much older GM cars and have never seen this problem before.

Just put an aftermarket head unit in there. You'll need to buy an adapter so that all your onstar and controls will work.

see this thread for more info https://www.hummerforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=16818

The factory monsoon system did come with a single disc option that could play mp3's on a disc. You can always buy adapters that will allow you to play through and IPOD.

However, the aftermarket headunits do so much more than the factory ones, it would be worth it to change. The bluetooth alone was worth it for me.
