I use a google voice phone number to monitor my calls automatically forward to my cellphone number(without back tracing), I get a voice/name recording to accept or ignore, before I accept the call on my cellphone.

I've been selling on CL for many years, yet recently I've been getting numerous requests: "can i send you 6 digits number to make sure you are real"
My response has ALWAYS been: No
I did some research on this and found:
If you give the verification code to the buyer as they asked, they use that code along with the phone number you posted in the ad to get their own free Google phone number. With that new number, cyber crooks could use it for illegal activities, and you would never know about it. An even bigger risk, scammers could get access to your Google account if they have enough information.

 

Thanks for verifying what I suspected... Recently posted some big trucks on Craig's List and in spite of ending the ad with "Call don't text" the scammers try their BS... Posted a car on CL a few years back and had an instant buyer wanting to pay asking price plus $2k to cover shipping... Never asked 1 question about the used car... LOL!!! After nearly 100 text messages and costing the scammer $20 to send a bogus cashiers check via priority mail I then had the scammer going to his Western Union location 3 times for my promised $2k wire-transfer before the deceiver realized he had been deceived... It's the only justice these scum bags get...

 

I sell on EB an CL (Fyi, both were established in 1995). I've been offered, yet NEVER would accept a check! CASH OR PAYPAL ONLY! 20+yrs selling online, and never got scammed! Cash you get it immediately, PAYPAL, you have to wait until your payment clears/deposited to my bank.

 

This sh/t is getting outta hand. 11 new listing today on CL, and 9 were hit by scammers.
These scumbags, only hit new listings and keep insisting I send the code, which would be sent from gmail, and if I did, they would have access to ALL my information. I still AVOID like the plague.

The good part after weeding out the scammers, I've had over 20 CL transactions here @ my home in the last week, cash and carry, during my liquidation sale $$$$.
