Default Roof Rack Opinions

Hey guys .... what are your opinions on the best roof racks? I'm planning a trip to Montana in a few weeks and wanted to get a good setup. I've done a quick search and obviously there are a ton of options and there are a lot that will get the job done but just not sure which ones look the best.

I'm leaning toward some kind of basket style that will fit on the OEM rack? Then I assume I'll do some kind of tarp setup to make it waterproof? The Yakima carriers are sealed and more aerodynamic but just seem like they will be ugly on my H2?

Anyone have one they love?

The hummer luggage carriers are nice. Will look good cause it says HUMMER on it. I did have a Gobi cage in the past. Very well made. Probably the best quality cage you can buy but expensive. $1600. I got rid of mine since I like to open my sunroof and the wind noise is unbearable with sunroof open.

Default OEM Thule's still out there?

Did a quick search on ebay and don't see any of the old OEM units available. Anyone have one they want to sell??

Thanks!

Gobi cage went from front cab lights to the back of the truck. The hummer cage is smaller and I think it can get mounted behind the sunroof. If you find one they usually go for about $700

I've not seen one of the factory ones come up for sale since I bought my H2 earlier this year.... nor really any of the Gobi's either (at least for under a grand) for that matter. And I have been looking.

Gobi does make one that installs behind the sunroof also. They have several configurations available. None are very cheap though. Check the Gobi site and you can see the different options they offer.

Below is what the factory option one looks like (looks to be installed a bit far forward in this pic). I've also though the factory optional one is almost too tall but I still kinda like it though. If you are big on using the sunroof the other pic would be a nifty feature to have. It was a concept special edition 2007 (would have been a 2008 model) - not sure if any every actually got made other than the concept one though. Would also pretty much negate having a roof basket of any type as well.

I really like the predator style search and rescue roof racks (admittedly non basket) they have for the H1. They're expensive, but i think they would look cool on the H2. We'd need to get a big group buy together and have someone fabricate them proprerly

There is a guy in Ohio who makes them custom made. He’s on one of my boards.

OEM is a nice rack but there just don't seem to be any around and when they are the guys want 2k-3k for them!
I had a Gobi ordered at $1600 and the dealer then couldn't get it for me. Gobi is notoriously 2-3 months lead time and terrible to deal with. I ended up getting my money refunded and built my own. It's not quite done yet. It will still get a ladder on the back, tire mount, shovel holder and tool boxes. Maybe a raised tent platform attachment. Building one yourself is doable but it takes a lot of time. If I was going to do it over I'd have it powder coated rather than painting it and I'd make it a little longer. It's made from 1" galvanized conduit so it's still pretty light weight 130lbs. I have 300-400 dollars into it.
