Re-Circulate turns AC On!
We all know that turning the dial to the windshield defogger turns on your AC compressor automatically, but I discovered a few days ago that simply turning on the recirculate button also turns your AC compressor on.
It was 70 the other day and I decided to test my AC. I turned on the AC for a few minutes and it was blowing cold, so I turned the AC off and just let the blower blow. It was still blowing freezing cold air. I said Hmm, the AC is off. This isn't right. SO, I turned off the recirculate button/vent, and then it started blowing warmer air.
I let the air in the car get hot by turning on the heat (it was pretty damn hot in there). I switched the dial to cold air instead of hot, so it was blowing the air from the outside, which was 70+ degrees. As soon as I turned on recirculate, the AC compressor popped on (you could hear it) and the air turned cold REALLY fast. It must have been about 85 degrees inside the car, so I know damn well it was cooling the air on the inside.
Maybe this is why some people get better mileage then others. If I would have known this my entire winter, I would not have used it as much as I did. My windows didn't fog up if I was the only one in the car, so I would keep it on floor and dash vents and recirculate on the cold cold days.
Why does GM do this stupid crap? I understand most people don't know the AC defog's the windows, but that should be a feature you can turn off, or maybe snip a wire on the climate controls so the AC does not come on when you select it. DOH!

NO it shuts off when you put it on defogger

The compressor turns on in recirculate mode to make sure that the windows do not fog up under certain conditions. This is common in most cars now. A few other brands take it a step further and eventime-outthe recirculation mode after 15 minutes of use.
Oh OK. Yeah you are right it turns off the recirculate, I thought you meant it turns off the AC.
Hey I know this is off the subject but is your job safe or are you still looking for a new one?
