I had the same smell but mine was a dying battery and the smell got worse with jump starting the H3. New battery (courtesy of Roadside Assistance) and Voila! no smell.
I would bet this is your problem. With those high quality AC Delco batteries

I had a dead cell in my battery, it died at about 2900 miles, never noticed any smell but I DID NOTICE THE DAMN THING DIDN'T START!.

I was able to jump it and take it to the dealer who promptly replaced the battery.

If it is the battery, how can I check for that? Will the smell be eminating from the battery? Will a multimeter help or do I need an ocilloscope?

Rob

You'll actually need a Dranetz Total Harmonic Disturbance Analyser.....

Seriously..Go to AutoZone andask them toperform a LOAD TEST (it's free)on the battery and determine that if it's crapping out or not.

It should be okay as long as you "check for the flow in the Dyna-flow" first!
