There is also another possible scenario as it relates to the prior owner's leaky seal. Doesn't really matter since the end result would be the same.

When you overfill a diff, that will eventually cause at least one the axle seals to blow, then leak, then scorch the bearings if not repaired quick enough.

So since we are blaming it upon somebody that can't defend themselves, let's say the rotten SOB overfilled the diff.

I agree witht that... but the old owner has no reason to even be around a ford escort this douche bag should be walking and never allowed around another car period I was able to pull the entire diff apart yesterday and the spiders are shot. This is the jacked up part , after looking at the parts explosion on the diff it appears the jacka$$ pulled the passenger side axel bearing out on accident and just decided NOT to put one in!!!!!!! Wtf some people should never never be allowed around cars....
