Oil Leak Back of Motor FYI
'06 H3
About a month ago I noticed some oil drops in the snow on my driveway. Decided it should be given immediate attention. Oil was running out of the rubber plug at the underside of the motor and in front of the transmission. Pulled the plug out and a few ounces of engine oil ran out. I'm thinking the worst case scenario, rear crankshaft seal blew out. Cleaned the area and ran the motor for about 20 minutes. No leak. While looking for a leak I started thinking about possible causes. Gasket for the counter balance shafts, oil pan gasket or the crankshaft seal? Installed the plug and drove for a few days and checked the leak. The oil leak didn't fix itself. Pulled the plug and snugged up oil pan bolts at the back of the motor, at least the ones that were easy to access including the ones up inside the plug. What did I have to loose? Just checked it again today and it's still dry!
