I do my own oil changes on my vehicles and i'm wondering if there is anything special i need to know about changing the oil on the H3? I've checked Youtube and didn't find anything and i don't even know where the oil pan drain bolt is..

i think i read i need to use 5w30 which is great because my other vehicles take that weight as well....

There a many threads on H3 oil change.

First suggestion would be do NOT change oil until the OLMS displays CHG OIL in the DIC display.

I do believe there is a pic tutorial in the H3 FAQ section if you want to look at that.

i do not remove the filler cap first. doesnt let the air in. this seems to slow down the gusher that goes 2 feet over to the right and over everything,big mess so be ready.

i cut a 5 gal bucket on an angle to fit under the crossmember and with luck catch most. you still need a flat pan under the plug.
its a mess till you learn how to control it,,,then theres the filter, another experience. ive never had a car that was such a mess,,,love my hummer!!

have some towels handy, cant have too many.

Not to second guess ya Doc, as youre one of the most experienced folks here, but...
If the person that did the last oil change on his truck didnt know about the h3's OLMS, they might not have reset it. If the truck was new to me, I'd change the oil right off the bat, just so I would know what I'm dealing with.
@ the OP: check your users manual, it'll give you the steps to resetting the OLMS when youre done with the oil change. I also dont remove the filler cap until I've taken the plug out and positioned a drain pan where it needs to be, helps to avoid a lot of spillage.

On my '06, the oil pan plug is on the drivers side of the pan. Easiest access for me is to crawl under it right behind the drivers front tire, it's staring you right in the face from there.

The filter is a real PITA....its too cramped of a place to get a filter wrench on there (at least in my experience) so youve gotta just grab it with a towel and give it the mustard. I've had the thought to get a filter relocation kit and move it somewhere more accessible, just never really had the motivation.

You make a good point. If FLblueH3 has no maintenance record or receipt showing when the last oil change was, then for his first oil change he might want to do it early.

I have never had any trouble with mess or the oil filter when doing a change. On trick is to park the truck with the front slightly lower than the rear so when it drains it comes out in front of the cross member instead of on it. The better trick is to use a Fumoto Oil Drain Valve F-107N (M12-1.75) with a short piece of hose. Install that at your next oil change, and no more mess ever.

 

I'll have to check carfax as it has a pretty good history at The GMC dealer. I think it was recently if I remember .

 

oh and I have the Fumoto on my Kia Optima and love it.
