Default Need a good set of LED or HID headlights for the H2

As a continuation of my rejuvenation of our 2007 Special Edition H2:

Tried a set of LED headlights in 6000K. Great color. Absolute crap light. The light was indeed perfect white, but they do not focus at all.

The OEM headlight housings are NOT designed for LED or HID lights. They just will not work properly with them.
The glass/plastic is cut wrong for those types of projectors. And the reflectors inside are designed to work to bend and focus light from regular front-projecting incandescent bubs. Not mutant projectors.

LED on left, OEM headlight on RIGHT. The OEM are ugly yellow but actually better as they throw more light further down the road.

Has anyone found a set of LED or HID that come with new headlight housings? The whole kit?

The headlight assembly needs to be changed out. I have scoured the internet, and can not find any retrofit kit for an H2 that includes housings.

Tried the HID bulbs also. They also scatter light badly in the OEM housings, so that is a no-go also.

Help! I am lost. ...

Thanks for the link.

THAT is exactly what I need!!

Perfect video. Incredible light output. Wow! Impressive.

But I am unclear as to what you actually did. Let me try to muddle my way thru it, since I am not savvy when it comes to headlights.

1. First order up 2 Morimoto FX-R 3.0 with 55W HID headlights. Do these come with ballasts, etc. already as a kit. Is it plug & play? Or do you have to splice wires and connectors?

And which version did you get? They show for LHD FX-R 3.0 the 2.5" and 3.0" version . Did you buy any sort of shroud with them?

They do not come with bulbs, so whose bulbs did you use? Can you please tell me the part # and brand? Did you buy them from the same outfit (guessing Retrofit Source in Atlanta?).

I will do exactly what you did, as you worked out the bugs and logistics already.

2. Then you cut the VERY expensive original reflector housing to fit projector. Make sure it is perfectly aligned to the road. Then figure out how to seal up again. Correct?

OK, that sucks for me.
Do you know of an option to retrofit a cheap reflector housing, so as not to deface the OEM version (which can be resold for big bucks or kept)?
Especially important if the Chopping does not go well the first time.

Presume you had to pull out the center cone reflector out of the housing, as that is in the way. But then, how did you seal up between projectors and reflector housing after the surgery?

Result was great light, but huge effort to achieve. Guessing there is no retrofit "Kit" that gives you all the pieces to do this swap painlessly?

Any part numbers and purchase sources for the pieces would be much appreciated.

Sincere thanks for your help!

Ok, here's the parts that i've used for this mods.

2x Morimoto FX-R 3.0 with 3" lens projector LHD (Left Hand Drive).

2x Apollo 3.0 shrouds.

2x Morimoto XSB 2.0 switchback halos 110mm.

55w AC HID kit with 5000k D2H ceramic bulbs.

2x JB Weld Steel Stik 8267-S

JB Kwik Weld 8270
https://www.amazon.com/J-B-Weld-8270...Kwik+Weld+8270

3M 08620 Window-Weld 1/4" x 15' Round Ribbon Sealer Roll
https://www.amazon.com/3M-08620-Wind...on+Sealer+Roll

1. Park your truck in a level surface facing the wall at a distance of 25ft.
2. Turn on your headlights and cross mark where the center of each beam on the wall.
3. Do not move the truck at this point as this is your reference guide when you adjust the projector later on.
4. Remove both headlight housing from the truck and separate the front plastic shroud from the housing.
5. Place the headlight housing in the oven at 400F for about 10 min. I put a piece of wood under it so it won't melt the plastic from the oven metal rack.
6. Carefully pry the edges with a thin flat screw driver until the lens separate from the housing.
7. Clean the sealer off the lens and the housing.
8. Now your ready to cut almost half of the housing to fit the massive projector. Check the lens too and make sure it won't touch the projector glass.
9. Once you fitted the projector into the housing, install the housing (without the lens) into the truck.
10. Install the HID kit into the truck.
11. Put the projector into the housing and install the hid bulbs.
12. Turn on the headlights and move the projector until the beam pattern aligned with the mark that you did before.
13. Take the JB Weld Stik, mix it and put it on any corner of the projector to hold it, make sure the beam is still aligned with the mark. It will only take a minute or two for the JB Weld to set.
14. Do the same on the other side.
15. Carefully remove the headlight housing from the truck so you don't disturb the projector alignment.
16. Mix the JB Kwik Weld and just put it in the gap between the projector and the housing. This could be messy.
17. Let the epoxy dry about an hour or so.
18. Get the Apollo 3.0 shroud and cut to fit.
19. Optional. Install the halos into the shroud. You can spray paint at this point if you like or leave it chrome.
20. Take the 3M sealer roll and put it around the headlight housing channels then install the lens. You can use a plier to slowly pinch the housing edges until it sits evenly.
21. Now your ready to finally install it on the truck.
22. Check and adjust the headlight if needed. The easiest way to do this is with any car (not truck) at 25ft, your projector cut-off should be below the car side mirror housing.

If you don't want to do all this work, you can just buy one of these.

Good write up.
Looks like it saves you about $360 over the prebuilt units.

I'm guessing that the prebuilt units are drop ins or do you still have to make sure that the headlight is correctly oriented?

I can't comment on those prebuilt as i've never used them before. Refer to their respective installation manuals for more info.

Yes, always check the headlight alignment and if necessary adjust it for optimum performance everytime you make a modification.

Or just go with the Philips LED headlights like I have and others have purchased. You have to enlarge the factory hole on the back of the housing but that's simple to get done.

Did you buy these off of eBay? Some other site? Link/part number?

Thanks!

In my experienced with led headlights (JW Speaker), it doesn't throw a lot of light and not as bright as the hid's with projector. That's why i retrofitted my headlights and accessory lights with hid's.
