miles per cupholder
after 20 years of government research, it has been decided that the only true measure of fuel economy is miles per cupholder.
so basically you'd take your mileage and multiply it by the # of cupholders to get the adjusted mileage. Further, a second rating will consider only mileage per driver-accessible cupholder.
so for an H2 the mileage would be 14*5 =70 for the overall cupholder adjustment and 14*2=28 for the driver adjustment.
A monte carlo would get 28 * 1 = 28, so the same driver adjustment as the H2, but much worse when viewed in light of overall cupholders. pretty shameful showing!
My pickup would get 13*2=26 for both ratings, which is just awful.
a prius would get 45-50*2=90-100 for the driver and 180-200 for the all-around.
And my neighbors pickup with the king ranch crew cab thing and the crew cab would get 17*8=136 for just the driver adjustment. the guy has cupholders coming out of everywhere. 2 on the console, 2 between the seats, on the doors, and some more in this pop-up compartment. i can't imagine they don't have at least 2 to 4 more in the back, so he probably gets 200+ for the overall.
Therefore, the best mileage on the planet is a big diesel crew cab pickup.

after thinking this through a bit more, i realized only 6 of the front cupholders are accessible to the driver, giving him 102 driver-adjusted MPG
