Default Market for Used H2 - Should I Buy Warranty?

Hey - new guy here. Looking at purchasing a 2004 H2 with 77k miles from a dealer within reasonable distance. I've read through what to look for but being not so mechanically inclined I get worried thinking of buying a 15 year old vehicle for $20k that could potentially have major issue soon after purchase.

This dealer offers an extended warranty which I would like to know if you think it is worth it and if it seems that it would cover most of any issues i should encounter. Below are the quotes which im sure are negotiable and what it covers. Thank you in advance.

Freedom Warranty
Drive 24 months / 30,000 miles $3480
Drive 36 months / 50,000 miles $3590
Drive 48 months / 70,000 miles $3700

was caused by an internally lubricated part or a part covered under this contract. All lubricated internal parts of the vehicle manufacturer installed

lubricated part or a part covered under this contract.

3. TRANSFER CASE (4 x 4 or All Wheel Drive): All internally lubricated parts within the Transfer Unit including: bearings, bushings, sprockets, chains,
sleeves, and gears. Transfer cases are also covered if Mechanical Breakdown was caused by an internally lubricated part of a part covered under this
contract. Transfer Units are only covered if selected on the Registration Page of this policy.
4. DRIVE AXLE (Front and Rear Wheel Drive): All internally lubricated parts contained within the housing: axle shafts, constant velocity joints (CV
joints unless boot is damaged or missing),universal joints, flexible joints, drive shafts, locking hubs, locking rings, supports, retainer and bearings.

75,000 miles. If the Coverage Starting Mileage is between 75,000 and 125,000 miles then seals, sealing boots (unless ripped or torn), and gaskets are
only covered if seals and gaskets coverage has been separately purchased. If the Coverage Starting Mileage is greater than 125,000 miles, the

I would say buy the warranty, the 48 month plan seems like the best value. Try and talk them down on the price of the warranty. I bet there is 50% profit in that price.

Thanks - it does look like it covers a lot of stuff plus Im sure the price can be negotiated down. It is also transferable to the next owner for $100 if I ever sell it before warranty expires, which I'm sure some people would find comfort in.

Are you buying this from a gm dealer. Or a dealer that will be doing the warranty work in house? Does thebwarranty go through a third party? My 3rd question is the one i would be very leary on. I got burnt once on a "third" party warranty. They will fix things if it relates to the safety inspection because they have to. But when the yransmission sh$ts the bed three weeks after your purchase. They tell you its "normal wear and tear". You'll have to fight to get anything fixed. That was my pleasant experience with third party warranties.

When i bought my jetta. I made sure to buy it from the vw dealer and the car cost a bit more but the warranty was great. Never an issue getting anything fixed and they would always wash it before they gave it back.

If its a third party warranty. I always say i dont want it and just focus on picking the vehicle apart and getting the price as low as i can. Then they usually tell you they cant do it for that price. Then i make sure i leave them my contact info and walk. They will usually call in 2or3 weeks if the vehicle hasnt moved with your price or a way better price than before. Just my two cents.

Good luck. The h2s are a pretty good investment compared to any other vehicle ive owned mine for 6-7 years and put 50k km on and its worth a few thousand more than i paid for it.

^I couldn't agree more. Third party warranties are junk IMO and you will fight like hell with them to get anything fixed. I almost guarantee the warranty is not through GM. I couldn't imagine a GM warranty on such an old vehicle which is bound to have some issues down the road. Not to mention many H2 specific parts are long but gone.

It's a 3rd party warranty through Freedom Warranty I believe. I'm leaning away from it now and just want to find a clean vehicle. There's an 03 with about 60k miles I am eyeing but it is in Fl and I am in NY, so would have to order a mechanical inspection report.

there is a GM warranty available- GM Protection Plan, I had one on my 2007 H3, uses all OEM parts, replaced Transmission, shocks and several other items before it expired.
