Default In the market for an H1

I am looking to buy an H1. Not looking to spend the money it would cost to get one of the newer years or alpha model.

Can anyone offer any insight on what to look for?
What to avoid?
Any known problems with specific models or model years?
Any maintenance issues or repair issues I would spot when I looked at them?
Any model year better than others?

Any help is greatly appreciated

The question has multiple correct answers. If the truck is going to be a dedicated trail rig then the older NA 6.5 trucks 94-96 are great trail rigs. They are lighter than the newer trucks and the NA motor is bulletproof. If you can BTM you can coax these trucks to take you almost anywhere.
97.5-98 are considered great offroad trucks by the oldtimers. They are the most refined/advanced of the pre-TT4 trucks. Purists seem to prefer these. 97.5 and 98 models had the updated HVAC systems and no TT4. They are great wheeling trucks. One issue to be aware of is that 25-30% of the blocks on these trucks had a design flaw which could cause the #8 cylinder to crack resulting in a new engine. Most have been replaced by now but I did just have the issue on my 98 and had to replace the engine with one of the newer heavy blocks.
2001-2002 have the newer heavy blocks but also have TT4. This is a slightly better version of the TT4 that was in the 99/00 models.
2003 was the most refined of the later model trucks and could be ordered with two piece dual beadlock wheels and a rear locker.
2004 had the Optimizer engine, the new "Alpha" interior and front and rear lockers. The Optimizer engine was the old 6.5 TD but with a Caterpillar control system. It has 10 more HP but has also had some difficult to diagnose engine power issues.
The was no 05 model.
2006 has the Duramax motor, Allison tranny, front and rear lockers, etc. It is the pinnacle of H1 development. I wheeled the Alpha in Moab this last trip and it was certainly the easiest to drive of any I have ever wheeled.
94-97 trucks can be had in the 25-35K range
97-7-2000 trucks can be bought between 28-45K
2001-2003 trucks seem to be selling between 34-55K
2004 trucks are between 60-70K
2006 trucks are between 85-125K
Prices are ranges depending on condition and mileage. You can find trucks in each model cheaper but they will generally require a lot of work.

Condition is far more important than mileage. These things are tanks and as long as they are maintained well they will last damn near forever. Make sure the maintenance is current or that you buy the truck at a price that is commensurate with condition. Taking someone that is familiar with H1s with you to check the trucks out can save you a ton of money.
Let me know if I can help in any way.

Great summary, thanks! I was taking a close look at '04 H1s before I purchased the H2. This info will come in handy at some point.
