Default Manual Shift **** replacment -HELP!

Hi guys,

I have a 2006 manual- I recently broke off the top part of the **** (shift pattern) and ordered a new one off ebay which should arrive shortly.

Does anyone know how to replace it?

After searching the furthest I've got is:

-unclip front 2 clips from boot at front
-unclip the rear 2 clips from boot
-supposely there is an allen bold on shaft?

Surely someone has done this swap successfully who can either confirm or deny the above? I read that the **** may/may not be welded to the shaft?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance!!!

On the automatic there IS a hex screw on the forward facing side, and bottom of the ****. The manual may be the same.

Hey Philster,

First, can I assume you are getting the new shift ****, boot, and shaft, in this order??

That's critical, because you can't just change the shift ****. The shift **** and shaft and boot comes as one unit and are pressed together. I have tried to separate mine and no dice.

Your instructions you posted are accurate and you will only need an allen wrench to remove the unit from the shaft that comes out of the top of the transmission. When installing make sure allen nut engages the detent on transmission shaft. If not, shift **** can rotate when shifting gears

I shortened my shaft from the transmission years ago and my shift **** sits about two inches shorter than stock. The guys at my dealer always make fun of my compulsive nature, in taking on projects like that.

Be careful in releasing the plastic clips that holds the boot to the console. If they break, nothing will hold the boot securely

Good luck

Thanks for your replies- greatly appreciated. I was unaware that the shaft needed to be replaced as well- I just looked at what I bought and it appears it is included. I ordered this -

HUMMER H3 MANUAL TRANS SHIFTER LEVER SHIFT **** & BOOT | eBay

The swap seems relatively straight forward (famous last words) . If anyone has any other useful tips please fire away!

Thanks again!

Sorry- one last thing- do you know how to remove the clips from bottom of boot? To your point - I'd like to avoid breaking them...

Thanks!

Some guys have just 'pulled' up from the top, but as Wil said, they can break. Pop the black console surround (it's just held on with clips). I usually open the arm rest storage and grip the edge from there. Work your way around and lift. Reach under the surround and you can release the boot clips safely. If you do break a boot clip, don't worry, your new boot has them on it.

Broken Halo is correct, the new boot has new plastic tabs on the boot skirt. I forgot about that, but you still don't want to damage the slots which are part of the console

To remove, pull the front part of the boot leather, nearest the vertical console straight back and it releases
You then have to reach around underneath the rear part of the boot to release the two plastic tabs. You can't see them, but you can feel them.
I believe the tabs are in slots and the tabs release by pulling each one up vertically
You could use a small mirror and flashlights to see hoe they look before you attempt.
Once you get the new shift mechanism, perhaps the new boot skirt slots will indicate how those tabs release

Hey Philster
Did the OEM part you ordered from eBay include the shaft as well? I need to replace mine also and wanted to make sure the part was complete.
Any issues when you got the part and made the swap?
How did it go with the boot clips? Thx
