Installing Thule Ski Rack on H2 Crossbar Racks
OK. i searched almost everywhere, i think, and could not find any posts on how to attatch the standard Thule ski rack to a Hummer big *** crossbar rack. so i went out on a limb and began rigging, if you will, my Thule ski rack to fit. this ski rack has the plastic connectors that wrap around a SMALL crossbar and snug up to fit right. the H2 crossbar is too big. so i was looking into how those things function,... unlock ends, T slot etc.. so here is what i ended up doing:
1. open up the rack all the way (180 degrees) and pull back the rubber deals. take a drill bit that just fits inside the rivet that attatches the black plastic clamp assembly to the aluminum ski rack on the bottom. drill that sucker out andremove the clamps from the rack. do this to both sides and then on the other ski rack. you should have a ski rack w/ flat bottom and you will notice some holes that you will use in next step to attatch to H2 crossbar. you can use the hole where the original rivet/clamp was, but you have to do the "pull the rubber" part back so tis speak.!
2. take the clamp now that you disassembled and unscrew from the bottom part of clamp (pics will help below). you will use the screws/bolts again, but only 2 bolts per rack.
3. now take the bottom clamp part that has the nut embedded on both sides. you will take a hacksaw and cut the end of it off just next to the rubber matting. picture will help again.
4.now, take off the end cap w/ key off your H2 crossbar & peel back the rubber top on whatever side you want to mount it on (about halfway).
5. take the ski rack and drop a bolt/screw on each end thru the hole w/ a washer (had one in shop) and attatch the"plastic deals" you cut off from the bottom part of the assembly in step 3 to the 2 bolts you dropped thru each hole. give it some turns by hand so the bolt is flush thru thenut in the "plastic deal". about 3-4 turns.
6.now youhavethe ski rack with the boltshanging thru with "plastic deals" on the ends.
7. now, start with the non-opening side of the ski rack and sit the end up to theH2 crossbar and fit that little "plastic deal"piece into the T-slot. will make sense when you are doing it. and now just slide it all the way in tohave the ski rack flush withthe end of the crossbar. now get ladder andtighten the bolts with the funny star allen wrench thingy that came with the Thule ski rack and youshould get a tight and professionallooking fit of the ski rack to the crossbar. do this with the otherone and your almsot done.
8. now climb up on top of the Hummer and eyeball the rubber filler in the crossbar and use some scissors to cut it to but up against the ski rack for both. your done.
hope thishelps. came out really nice and should work just fine. i havent ops tested ityet, but i see no reason that it won't hold up. let me know if you have any questions. thanks forplaying!!
