Default Idle help

Ok so my 3 is having some engine issues. When it first starts up for the day it isles fine but after about 20 minutes of driving in traffic the idle gets rough. Already did a fuel system clean, changed the spark plugs, and intake. RPMs stay around 500-600 and all the lights dim, going to check the alternator when I get to work but it was just rebuilt 6 months ago. Any ideas about what to try next?

I had a similar problem, cleaned the Mass Airflow Sensor and it went away for a while. Now seems to come back after a few weeks. I am not sure if I will have to buy a new MAF (about $120) or just clean it regularly.

Check the MAP sensor and its connection as well. That's what fixed mine.

I cleaned out the intake with carb cleaner and that has seemed to work for about 20,000 miles so far

What you are describing is caused by 1) a dirty Throttle Body, and/or 2) a dirty MAF. It can be from either, or a combination of both. I can explain why, and what is happening, but who gives a rat's butt. Clean both since you have to pull off the intake anyway.

Use only MAF cleaner for the MAF, you can use carb cleaner on the TB (a bit harsh, but it will clean it) but they also make TB Cleaner. These symptoms show up at about/after 50K miles, you would be surprised how dirty the TB gets.

TBs will virtually last forever if cleaned at 50K intervals by removing it, cleaning it inside and out. What may go is the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) which can be replaced, but it does make sense to replace the entire TB with refurbished (which should be spotless with freshly lubed butterfly bushing, and have a new TPS in it) and sell your old one back as a core if your TPS is bad.

A bad TPS will throw a code and may put you into reduced power mode. A dirty TB by itself usually will not trip a code.
