Default I want to pick your brains

I am seriously considering an H3 as my next vehicle and have some questions:

1. What are the up and downsides of the vehicle?

2. Reliability?

3. Real world Mpg?

4. Should I stay away from a 2006 with the smaller engine? Is there a noticeable difference between the 3.5 and 3.7?

5. Any necessary modifications?

6. Out of the box ready for off road?

7. How does it handle in the snow?

If I think of more I'll ask.

Thanks in advance

1. What are the up and downsides of the vehicle?
Pros: unique piece of American muscle.
Cons: maybe it's just me, but I catch a lot of flack from bozo's. They've never owned a hummer or even driven one but continue to tell me how bad they are, wasteful, etc. Bozos!

2. Reliability?
I've owned my 06 adventure since 2009. Since then, I've replaced the radiator, blower motor wire harness, shocks, battery terminals, spark plugs and one coil pack. 80k miles to date

3. Real world Mpg?
I am at the low side apparently. I get 15mpg, some members are getting around 18.

4. Should I stay away from a 2006 with the smaller engine? Is there a noticeable difference between the 3.5 and 3.7?
Never been in a 3.7 or alpha so I can't answer. My 3.5l has never let me down but I also don't try to race.

5. Any necessary modifications?
Battery terminals are a MUST.
Clean moonroof drains yearly.

6. Out of the box ready for off road?
More so than most vehicles on the market. Define off road? Moab or just getting to a campground?

7. How does it handle in the snow?
I've had an absolute blast in the snow. During Washington D.C.'s snowpacolapse, I was the only vehicle driving around on base (besides the hmmwv's)

If I think of more I'll ask.

Thanks in advance[/QUOTE]

It's not a Honda.

2. Reliability?
See above. Mentally I mostly imagine it being just around the corner from a major breakdown, but mine have been about average in reliability. The issues are well known by now. Electrical gremlins can be a whole other story though, keep the battery and terminals in good condition.

3. Real world Mpg?
I've seen up to 20, usually 17-18 on the highway, but 15-16 is pretty average depending on tires, roof rack, winter fuel, etc. I have gotten 10.5 on short trips commuting to and from work around surface streets.

4. Should I stay away from a 2006 with the smaller engine? Is there a noticeable difference between the 3.5 and 3.7?
The 3.5 has a little more torque between 2-3000 rpm, but the 3.7 has a noticeable 10% power increase

5. Any necessary modifications?
Shackles and torsion bar crank, aggressive tires. Beyond that its just really about customizing it to your tastes. (Well, on mine I've re-clocked the rear wiper, ditched the nerf bars, moved the rear view mirror up higher toward the roof, removed the airbox restriction in the fender and put in the rubber, offroad floor mats.)

6. Out of the box ready for off road?
yes, more so than almost any other SUV. The adventure model only needs some minor tweaks to keep up with JKU's (see above)

7. How does it handle in the snow?
Crazy good. The traction control works very well, especially with good tires.

If I think of more I'll ask.

Thanks in advance
I'm sure there's more than what I put in above, but that will get you started.

Thank you for being very specific. What are wrong with the stock battery terminals? I am not a serious offroader, mainly two track and a little bit of gravel pits. I get into deep snow at times though.

I also heard a rumor of the 2007's having iffy transmissions? Any truth to this? The one I am looking at is a 2007 with 39k miles.

The 2007's transmission is just as good as the other year models, that is to say, borderline ok. The H3 transmissions have all the durability updates, but the 4L65e is better, and a 5 or 6 speed is even better. Just change the transmission and transfer case fluids early to keep wear down for a long life. The stock battery terminals have a small contact area, they are cheap, not high quality. Aftermarket terminals have more contact area and less resistance. Since the H3's electronic systems go crazy with phantom problems at lower voltages, it's cheap insurance. You might want to look at the radiator for wear and cracks, the condition of the front differential or crossmember and steering rack bushings too.
