I think I figures something out as far as MPG
I got my h3 with 2.4 miles on it and babied it as much as I could for the first 500 miles. Living in central NJ and driving into Manahatten every week didn't make babying the truck possible all the time though. I started towing my boat when the truck had 550 miles on the clock, the manual says not to tow until it has 500 so I thought I was ok. I tow about 200 miles a week. I wonder if bieng that I tow often and started at a little over 500 miles if this could have skewed my computer settings?
I think I am going to reset the pcm and start over, anyone know for sure how to reset the computer on the H3, I've done the ole disconnect negative terminal on the battery and push the brake till they die thing on other trucks before but don't know if it will work on the h3? any ideas?

I think it says 5000 miles for towing, not 500. So you got it and right off the bat you did some crazy driving, and started to tow after only 500 miles?
And you wonder why you are getting bad mileage........

You know, I'm starting to wonder if there are different revisions of the manual. The reason I say this is because different people talk about different things they see in the manual that some people don't see. I wonder if they changed anything. when did you say you bought your H3 again?
Unless I'm wrong, and I'm certainly not an expert, the break in period is more about the actual mechanical parts getting seated etc. Piston rings, valves etc etc. Even the ring and pinion need to get hot and stew in the gear oil to get conditioned for 500 miles or they are suseptable to broken teeth on the gears, or stress fractures... since they are still "soft" when they are new.
Even replacing a ring and pinion in an older vehicle will still require you to not tow, or make an hard starts (full throttle take offs) for the 500 mile break in period. They need time to get "tempered", or hardened in the oil.
But, with everything getting so technical these days, you could be on to something. It would be news to me though. I just don't really see that towing before the end of the break in time would goof up the puter, and cause bad gas mileage. I can see where the puter was goofy from the start, and could need a reflash.
Whatever is wrong, I hope they are able to correct it for you. Gas is too high to be using more than you need to these days.
Good luck with it.
