Red face How do you use the H3 4 wheel drive correctly?

I am ashamed to ask ….Are there any videos or something to show how to use the 4 wheel drive on an H3 correctly? Do I just put it in 4 low and give it hell? Or just let the motor do all the work at the pace it wants to? When do I use 4 low? Mud, water, rocks, uphill, and downhill. I am sure there has got to be a right way and a wrong way and I want to know the difference, so please, don’t make fun of me for asking or not being born with the inherent abilities of my 4 wheelin’ brotheren.

Does your 06 H3 have the Adventure package? There are several members that live in TX that may take you under their wing and go wheeling with ya and show you how everything works. If you lived closer to MI I'd take ya out and learn ya'.

Anyway, NO! DO NOT "just put it in 4 low and give it hell"! You have an aluminum front differential and an IFS front end. Unless you want to blow a halfshaft or the pinion gear, slow and steady over rocks, hills etc. For Mud and water crossings please check the depth and make sure there are no "unseen" obsticles (stumps, rocks, etc) FIRST! No that you have 315s Do not "spin" your front tires (a little is fine) once they grab the shock is sometimes enough to blow the half shafts and/or front diff. You will be amazed at what your HUMMER can do at a slow pace that most Jeepers can't do even mashing the pedal.

Watch plenty of videos on youtube etc of H3/H3Ts wheeling. you will come to notice the guys who know how to wheel and others that just "mash and go". the "mash and go" guys are the ones who pay a lot of $ to have their HUMMERs fixed.

As far as selecting between 4HI lock and 4 LO lock it all depends on the terrain, what your comfort level and experience. I can't just type something here and have it be true for any certian situation. All wheeling is different and you must get to know your vehicle and the way in whick it behaves. Don't be afraid to try something in 4Hi lock. If you can't do it in 2-3 trys then try 4LO lock. That is the only way to learn and become a better H3 HUMMER wheeler in my tiny opinion.

Send me your contact info and we will get you out on the trails and show you how to wheel your H3. Tainter is right in that different situations call for different responses. Part of what we do is introduce new owners to responsible wheeling. Happy to do it. Look forward to getting you on the trail.

The "Dumb question" that you were NOT ashamed to ask is the difference in having a great time and a long ride home on a flatbed...

There are a lot of GREAT wheelers in Texas. Many on this forum as well as others...

THANK ALL Y'ALL!! I live in north Texas. an hour north of Dallas....I do know of places to go to ride my dirt bike, but I want to give wheeling a try. I LOVE my Hummer....I am ready to take it off road the right way. You can PM me and I will be happy to give you my cell number. I have been looking at you tube for help and I always find the guys that try to jump thier H3's and haul *** through the muddy water...... I know that is NOT the right way....

PM sent. Hauling through stuff is for the desert racing crowd, wheeling is more about control. You will be surprised how quickly you pick up the basics, then experience will teach you how to handle the myriad situations you can find yourself in. Just left Texas a few days ago. Will be back soon but I have sent your contact info to some people to get in touch with you. We will have you on a run before long.

Thumbs up Do NOT be afraid to ask!

The people who are afraid or too proud to ask are the ones who end up getting towed! Good for you to find an AWESOME site with people who live and breathe what you are interested in! There is nothing but knowledge and help here! Thanks to all and RIDE ON!

Tainters wheel spin tip is huge, I recently overdid it and trashed a half shaft, expensive mistake.

Actually, it was more of the fact that I let some fktard I didn't know and trust towstrap me and he just yanked me as hard as he could while I was giving it gas and I literally flew down off of the obstacle so fast I couldn't get up off of the gas and "OH GOD *THUMP click click click click* sigh......"
