Default Home made - shop built roof rack ? ?

I just picked up another 03 H2 with 24,000 miles for about $22,000 which had been seized in a drug raid.
Now I get to take my other O3 H2 with 115,000 miles and have it replace my work pickup.
SInce GOBI roof racks are so darn expensive I am thinking of having a local shop built a rack and have it powder coated.
I have seen one good picture of the forum of a shop built rack.
Anyone have any other good pictures or advise ?
Of course the biggest question is grabbing onto the roof rail ? I see you can removed the plastic gizmo in front of the rear top clearance lights but it leaves a very thin slot to get into. Any suggestions as to custom made attachments ? ?

Also, how deep would yo made the rack, 4" or 6" ??
I will possibly mount my spare tire on top.

Tom if you are a member of THCI I would wait till you get your next Azimuth Magazine. There is going to be a GREAT offer to HCI club members only on Gobi products. You will be amazed at the pricing we are getting from one of their dealers.
