Hey there! There is actually a guy on here RIGHT NOW who's trading in his JK jeep and getting a new HUMMER. Good choice for you to make!
The inline 5 motor is good on gas (get 19.2 with the bone-stock factory airfilter it came off the line with.. a good intake and tuner and I'll be over 20mpg with the automatic). The v8 has MUCH more power, but also sucks down gas. I am an automatic fan for driving offroad; BUT lots of people prefer manuals offroad. Plus the manual will give you about 22-23mpg highway. The offroad package is EXCELLENT. It comes with front and rear lockers. You dont NEED the adventure (offroad) package, but having front and rear lockers is a great thing to have. But even without them these trucks are highly capable.

I have a 3.7 H3 with a 5 speed, and I haven't yet found a time when I needed a v8. It's got as much power as I need. Though I don't tow anything, I might want a v8 if I did.

Having the adventure package with the front and rear lockers is nice to have for a "just-in-case" reason. Mine doesn't have it, and I haven't gotten stuck yet. But I know I'll eventually get into something where I'll wish I had it.

That really depends. The i5 really isn't a pig like a lot of people say it is. And the thing of it is, you can do an airdoc sealed intake, K&N filter, pcm4less tune, and throttlebody spacer and it will have plenty of pep, and more than likely get over 20mpg. An alpha will have LOTS more power stock, can be modded to make LOTS more power, BUT you will be surprised to see over 16mpg highway with one lol. I went on a beach trip with my wife, daughter, best friend, and his wife. We had a tent that ALONE weighed 300lbs, and the entire back of the truck was filled to the top (no rear view) and I even went and bought a hitch-reciever cargo-carrier. I had a good 775lbs in passenger weight, and a good 550-600lbs in camping gear/5days worth of clothing and ammenities. Going thru the insane hills of WV and VA on the way to NC, I still only lost about 1-1.5mpg. I was still averaging damn near 18mpg going 6-7mph over the speed limit. These trucks are half-ton trucks, you aren't going to weigh down the rear of them.

I can imagine the 5spd is MUCh peppier than my autmatic, and the mileage is far greater. I've towed a duck hunting boat with my truck and couldnt' even tell its there.

I just went from an 07 Jk Wrangler to an 07 H3, I love it no regrets so far. I loved the jeep but I have a new born and I didnt feel safe drivimg her around in it. This was the best move ive done. Wifey loves it and my 5 year old calls it the monster truck. I was lucky to have found it 5speed man. The drive is day and night, I had a 2 inch lift and 33's on the jeep with exahust so that was a rough ride. I had fun with the Jeep but I think I will have more fun with the H3. Good luck on your choices

Default h3t? choices??,,none

i heard last week there were no h3t left in USA ,new at any dealer.
the source sounded knowledgeable so if shopping for h3t you might need to look for used trucks

Power is always a good thing at altitude, so the V8 is probably worthwhile for you.

I just traded my 06 H3 Lux in two weeks ago for a 08 H3 Alpha with Adventure package and all I can say is WOW. There really is a night and day difference. I had to 06 for two years and loved everything about it except the 3.5L engine, just not enough power. Heading out to the desert this coming weekend so really looking forward to putting the Alpha through its paces. I took it out for a quick little tease last week to a place where I use to take my 06, there is a rather steep hill that in 8 attempts over various visits I managed to get up and over only three times…..the Alpha made it up ridiculously easy all three times I went up. In my mind there is just no comparison, get the Alpha.
