Heat gun on faded black plastic....
...doesn't work. I have a 2006 H3 and tried the heat gun on the black plastic above the passenger taillight yesterday. It didn't work as hoped. I used a Black and Decker heat gun. I stopped when I noticed the plastic start to melt.
Just an FYI for you

It works well, actually.
I just did a set of Fender flares for my Buddies Jeep, last weekend. He couldn't believe how well it worked, flares went from almost white to a dark grey.
I used a Milwaukee Heat gun, High setting. Held it about 1-2" away from plastic, you just have to keep the gun moving.
I'm actually going to do it to the plastic A-pillar parts on both sides of the windshield sometime this week.
It even helps hide scratches on interior pieces.
Sorry you didn't have good luck with it.

I tried it and was impressed! I had scratches on my interior cargo panels and tried all kind of plastic products and nothing worked....used the heat gun and can't even tell they were there.
