Default Hard unlock of 4wd??

I Just purchased a 2006 H3 and have had some problems with my 4wd lock not coming out and throwing a bunch of error codes. Replaced the actuator, and all codes went away and appeared to work. It still had an issue parking in a parking lot on dry pavement. It felt like the 4wd lock was still engaged. I backed it up several times, tied parking again and finally a big bang in the rear end. All appears to be normal but am skeptical. Thoughts?? What should I check for damage.

I did a lot of research on that... I am not sure how the plastic shift fork would cause a bang in the rear and not the front but will still look into it. It appears to be functioning normal. Im kinda afraid to put it into 4wd lock at this time but I know I will. Is the shift fork a hard job to replace? I am quite handy with machinery but by no means a mechanic. I see there is an aluminum shift fork that is available.

Hello and Welcome to HF. I MOVED this thread for you because we have this radical set up where questions about H3s, go in the H3 section.

All 2006s had the plastic shift fork in the T Case, they get hot, melt, bend or break, and then you can get stuck in lock, or cannot shift into lock from hi.
The T Case has 2 forks, one for lock, and one to shift to low, it is the lock fork that causes problems. The redesigned fork came out in early 2007 models, and it isn't aluminum, rather some white metal and takes care of the melting/bending/breaking.

You might have thought the sound came from the rear, but it may have been the T Case you actually heard?

Search H3 plastic shift fork, google it, there are step by steps out there.

Does your 06 have the rear locker?

yes it is supposed to have the rear locker. I had to replace the transfer case actuator... rusted to death. Is there something I need to replace in the rear as well?

The rear locker is controlled independently of the T Case, but can only be engaged when in lo lock. There rear locker has its own control button to the right of the T Case buttons and passenger air bag, left of the Traction Control Button. The little guy lit in the pic with the 4 tires and drive axles in between.

Might want to read the Owners Manual?

I ordered a shift fork and going to attempt to replace it myself. Any other parts I should order or any things I should look for when I tear her apart? I appreciate the advise!
