H3 help!!!!
So if someone has any info I need help! I was driving my H3 down the highway and all of the sudden I lost power to the wheels and and my engine reved up like I was in neutral and was pushing the gas. I pulled over and put it in park and when I did it made a loud grinding noise and idled down. I turned it off and had it towed home. So Later that day when I got back home I cranked it and when I put it in drive and it just revs up with no power to the wheels and again made a loud grinding noise when I put it in park. I tried it one more time and before I put it in drive I switched to 4 WD High lock then I put it in drive and could drive it in my yard no problem. Does anyone know what this might be?

Front diff Ring and pinion, half shaft, intermediate shaft, front prop shaft.
Have you crawled under it to assess is any damage or fluid leaking? |
Miles would be important to know when asking any question.
Your Transmission or transfer case is cooked and you need a rebuild or replacement. |
Check fluids and look for metallic flakes.
Pull the trans dipstick and wipe on a white paper towel and post picture. After that, drain the fluid at the front differential and post a picture: |
I will tomorrow thank you!
|
|
Sounds like a transfer case issue.

I’ll be able to do that tomorrow morning. I had a lot on my plate today I had to take care of. I will post pics of what comes out. Thanks again!

Could b ewrong I suppose, but my money is on the transfer case encoder motor. That's the exact symptoms I have seen before with my wife's Tahoe. Hint, OEM encoder motor only, or you will be replacing it again.

Also I forgot to add that the CV joint on my front drive shaft was messed up. The boot was ripped off and slung into my under carriage. Believe it or not it was still stuck behind a piece of metal and I was able to grab it out. I replaced that part but still had the issue.

I’m hoping to drain it in the morning. I have a small business I run and I have real busy this week.
|
i Didn’t find any metal flakes or chunks in the differential oil! I drained it all then slowly poured most of it off til I got to the bottom of the pan and it was clean.

Yeah that was the only thing I had to put the oil in. My neighbor helped me check it for metal but it didn’t have any in it.

help
I wonder if that was the result of a stabilitrac shut down causing a low power mode while going down the highway? That happened to me going about 30 mph. Suddenly lost power and rev than i couldn't go more then 10 mph. No damage just cleaning the aftermath of a rogue mouse ate half my air filter.

Could that still be the issue even though I can switch to 4 High lock and 4 Low lock? I can switch to those and drive around my yard.

I never noticed this until my buddy came by, but with my H3 in park in 4HI unlocked you can just push it around the yard.

Update!
We found the problem! My passenger side CV Axel was pushed out. I just have to buy a new one and install it. This whole time I was thinking it was my differential but it seems I was lucky this time.

No shrapnel! It was just piped out. We were able to pop it back in and it ran just fine. I just drove it about 20 miles with no issues. We think the round clip is just wore out so I’m still going to replace it.

What you describe is a common problem when someone uses a cheap Asian replacement half shaft.... they are too short and can pop out from the differential with the splines making little or not much contact in the differential while driving. Usually the situation trashes either the female differential end or the male shaft end, or both, and is something to be avoided. Never saw one popped back in good to go.
Let us know how that works out. |
Yeah seems strange to me. I haven’t drove it on the highway yet. I’m kinda worried it’s gonna happen again. When I drive it to the store or around the lake where I live it seems to be fine though. I’m still going to replace it this week just to make sure.
