Your man may be confused. The original engine was the 3.5 liter and was upgraded with a larger head configuration after complaints of power...
Do some research for yourself and check around. There are quite a few of these blocks around and as was said are common in Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon and the H3 Hummers.
Even in the land down under there should be some stock if you are a smart shopper.
