Hello every1 ...


We've been planning this trip for a long time ... From Miami To Jackson Hole Wyoming ... 5200 miles RT

The thing is that I know nothing about preparing a truck for extreme cold conditions

Any advise very much appreciate ... For now I check the tires are marked as SM . Im buying tire chains just in case , a shovel and some blankets ...

What should I do about the truck fluids , tire pressure etc ... I will be driving end of Dec , of course most possible on snow and icy conditions .. How this truck handle this environment ..

I have the exact same Hummer as you do and it is the best vehicle I have ever driven in the snow. You shouldn't have to do anything other than making sure your truck is in good condition. I would make sure your battery is fresh, your coolant should be flushed and refilled and use synthetic fluids in the running gear. I would also suggest you study the owners manual to get familiar with the various ways to engage the 4x4 settings. Have fun!

 

I live in Colorado and drive my Deuce hard in the winter. Make sure your windshield washer fluids freeze-proof (-25 or so, I use Peak).

 

Will you be driving through the Denver area?

I will take the I80 passing near Denver ... My original plan was to fly Denver then drive to JAC counting with the fares and rent a car would be a little cheaper but it is not.

Also Salt lake city was a plan but same thing . flights were very expensive plus renting a car no cheap either .
Driving a H2 from Miami to Wyoming ... NOT cheap at all but Im tired of airports . 5200 miles RT Im looking to spend around $370GL $1300 in gas RT (@14mpg .. no AC . cruise speed 65mph ) .. A trip to make once ... Still fun

Traveling through the midwest you will get ran over at 65 mph. I80 you need to run 75 mph and I usually run 80 mph Your mileage will be about 10mpg

 

80 mph In winter ... crazy ... I drive 80 all day but not in ice cond .. well I guess I would have to change that

 

Well I don't mean in snow or ice but it's not always snowing in the winter here in the midwest. If you come through KS stop by and we can take a picture of two fusion orange H2's next to each other.

 

Miami, the best setting when your in a snowy condition is 4hi. just slow down to @ 30 mph and hit the middle button. that's all you need to do if you get caught in a severe snow condition. I drive it through storms on purpose because I can! One year during a particularly nasty snowstorm I was headed up into the Sierra Nevadas (Mammoth Lakes) to do a little skiing. the CHP stopped me to make sure I had chains ( they were not on the car) I showed him the chains and he waved me through but was stopping all vehicle and making them install their chains. Hit the grade at about 65Mph and never stopped, all the way up the mountain. Obviously give yourself plenty of stopping distance if there is traffic in front of you but the beast handled magnificently on ice. It was completely whited out. You couldn't tell you were on blacktop. Drive the wheels off it.

 

Bad/Good News

The bad : the road trip was canceled ...
The Good : I got the trip for less than $1100 including air fare and car rental

I was very exited about this trip ,,, It makes sense while the air tickets were in the $700 range each people plus another $500 for the SUV rental ...

Crazy how everything change in one night , we check the prices this morning to find the air ticket @ $325 and the car $158 for the 8 days .. Very good deal to just pass it so the road trip have to wait ...

Im kind of frustrated ... I was already enjoying this road trip ...

H2cane : You make me jealous with the story ,I spent hour watching Hummers going trough the snow , storms or just driving on the mountains ... Well what can I said Im still not sure I take the right decision on leaving the driving plans ....
