I'm 16 and I Drive an Bright White H2 and the only 2 things that happened to me is that I got flipped off by a Jeep owner and by a Prius.

The only problem I have with driving it is getting out of the parking lot in under 15 minutes.

And get him involved in this website. I learned a LOT from here!

I like that your thinking about safety, I would lean more toward the h2 just because he is a newer inexperienced driver. the H1, While being an awsome machine, is a bit wide for most highway lanes, drive thrus and a hundred other things that he is gonna try with it and you probably want to avoid the taking out of mirror on parked cars and stuff like that. It is also a bit more intimidating to drive. I still drive my H2 in the city BECAUSE of other drivers, I've been hit twice and my wife three times here in Los Angeles, all without personal injury to us when in the hummer, and I won't ever drive a small car again.
