For those who have taken their doors off, has anyone ever run into the ear part of the door hinge not coming off even after the bolt is removed? I need to repair my worn hinge, but cannot get the door off until I get this freed. I've tried persuading it (a lot) with a hammer and punch, but it won't budge. Anyone else have this problem and figured it out?
Yes, bolt is removed. Top hinge is loose, but the bottom hinge is staying put like the bolt is still there. It's soaking with some penetrant, but there is no corrosion that I can tell. But it is acting like it's corroded on...
Finally got it figured out. I did have a problem with the hinge being stuck, but I was also not picturing how it came off correctly either. For future reference:
These hinges are rebuildable. I purchased the following hinge parts from Autozone:
In my case, the hinge was corroded on the tapered part of the hinge pin. I ended up taking the hinge off the door to get better access. There were two 10mm bolts, and they were fairly easy to get to with an open end wrench.
This really isn't a driveway job - after getting the hinges off the truck, the pins are pressed onto the smaller "ear" piece. It took some hammering with a punch to get it out, and then I needed to clean up the hinge hole with a drill bit and emery cloth. After that I was able to press in the bushing using the new pin and a hammer. Finally, I put the new pin in, and hammered on the "ear" to the knurled part of the new hinge pin.
Before my door would sag when I opened it, and I would need to close it harder than normal to allow it to "jump" up and on the latch. It is SO much better now. Overall it was a bit more involved than I thought, but big picture it wasn't that difficult for normal maintenance.
Also, I read a few posts that said the Dorman parts didn't fit, but they were fine for me.
Thank you for sharing and putting picture up for a better understanding and for future reference. This is why I like forums as it’s an archive of information.
