DIY Snorkel Question Idea And is it possible?
Ive seen on this forums a bunch of you guys upgraded your intakes to Spectre kind which was cost effective and ran a hose from the box to the fender. But why stop there? why not run the tube hose from the fender all the way up to the intake covers? Is there enough clearance to do that and make your own snorkel ?

I have seen it done once and it required the use of a 4" hole saw to the structure under the fake air vent and some major DIY time.

just how deep, on tires or fenders would someone go without messing with some electronics and getting messed up?

I think those "intake" covers are really exhaust covers. You can feel hot air coming out of them. You can do that and you can see as the water gets to them but I like the extra margin, just in case. I don't ford deep streams on purpose.
Just about as deep as the dash glove box that the BCM is located behind would probably do it. I think that and the PCM and TCM are sealed but the connections are not done very well. A big gulp of water on the fuse box would probably be bad, very bad. In my case the snorkle was for a bit of insurance after fording a creek that happened to have a deep spot the walk thru did not detect. I got over a bit too far. I dropped the pass side tire in a hole but keep moving so all was well. Attachment 14443 Attachment 14444 It also is a good way to get good cleaner air up above the wheel well intake about level with the headlights. Adding a Sy-klone pre filter will keep you air cleaner, cleaner. http://www.sy-klone.com/mm5/merchant...ory_Code=NW-4W Attachment 14445 Having a tarp or plastic sheet to spread over the grill can also help prevent a flood of water coming in and being picked up by the fan and hosing everything down. Coils and sparkplug wiring are not too happy about flooding either. The only time I had to run thru some water was with an incoming tide and the choice to drive 60 miles back the way I came or run the last 1/4 mile. (dumb) It was 20 miles back the way I came on the beach part with the tide coming in so I pressed on! If I slowed down the incoming waves washed the sand out from under my tires and I had that sinking feeling so I kept a steady speed. Glad I had the snorkle. I watched these guys flog it thru here then drove calmly thru it and just for grins backed thru it a second time. All of them are long time friends but flooded ignitions and air filters stopped them all. They had to go to town to get new elements.
