Default dealer had my stock tires inflated to 40psi door jamb says 30psi...much better in snow now

I was checking my tire pressure yesterday had it in last week for nail in rear tire and dealer patched hole. To my amazement, my tires registered 38 to 39 psi at 10 degrees F. When I took my hummer in to have the tire fixed it was 35 degrees F. Since I registered 38 to 39 psi at 10 deg wouldn't that translate to about 40 to 41 at 35 deg?? Not sure why they overinflated my tires if the door jamb says 30psi.

Anyway, I lowered my pressures to 30psi all around and found a noticable difference in the snow traction (deeper snow). I was able to move thru some of the 10 - 12" snow much easier and didn't feel like I was snow-plowing thru the snow.

Does 10psi really make that much difference in the snow or is it just in my head??

I drove thru some fairly deep stuff in the standard AWD mode to try to help a stuck Neon. Not sure why he tried to navigate a parking lot that had at least 10" of snow in the shallow spots and more every where else. Wasn't able to help him since his cars front and rear suspension was burried in snow. I thought about having him lower his windows and loop 2 yellow straps from my hitch, thru his rear window, effectively using his b-pillar to pull with...............but, I decided against that since that probably would have bent (or matchboxed) his door frame. He was stuck good. Told him that there was nothing I could safely do for him except let him call a tow truck from my on-star phone. Upon leaving, I did have to engage 4-High. I had no problem getting out. The only problem I have now in the snow is getting good traction thru snow that is up to my tow hook bolts....anything less is not too much of a hastle.

40 psi is ok, most tire manufactures say that 32 psi is optumale for the best ride a fuel economy. butI run 40psi in myZR2 on dry roads but in the snow that we have been having here in Vancouver i have my tires at 20 for floatation
