Default dead speedometer recommendations

hey guys,
i am curious to know if anyone else's hummer is as fast as mine. i can do 90 in neutral. It seems as if I have the same problem, yet again, as many of you do. I am making a new thread to see what ya'll recommend doing. There is this guy on ebay that will repair a gauge on the cluster for $85. Has anyone done this or recommends doing it? Should i purchase a new cluster online and try to do it myself? Or should i bite the bullet and take my car to the vultures at the hummer dealership? All opinions, comments, and rants are welcome.
Thanks alot

I am just going to be honest and this is my total opinion.

I had them to fail when I had to change my battery in my Hummer.

I am so scared to change my battery that I take it to the dealership to do it.
Here is what the dealer told me. They asked....Did u change the battery with the key in the ignition? I said I dont know but I could have. Well they said if the key is in then the computer is active. When I put the new battery in, they said it zapped the gauges.
So now I am fretting to change my battery if and when it goes bad. Thats why if I take it to the dealership for a battery change, if they kill the gauges they will fix it.
I went ahead and bit the bullet. The dealership ordered me new gauges and installed them. I felt I would mess it up if I did the ebay thing and I didnt want a "fixed" cluster. I wanted a whole new assembly
There have been people on here that said its an easy install but I personally think its tough to do it and not scratch up the clear glass.
This is all my own opinion totally though. Just my experience.
All I know is I went to change my battery and after I got it changed they didnt work so now I am scared to change the battery!

BigT, I'm pretty much sure I did the same thing. I unhooked my battery when i was victimized by the phantom wiper. How much did you wind up paying after everything was said and done?

I think I ended up paying like 600 dollars. Its been two years but I know it was expensive. It may have been 400 dollars.
