Clicking Noise from Wheels??

I got an embarassing clicking noise coming from all (?) 4 wheels. I can hear it when I drive windows down near walls which will echo the sound. I had a garage checking the drivetrain and the geared hubs but they couldn't find it.
Also when I go slow speed and have to break the front wheels go into a stuttering mode chopping over the ground.
Could there be something wrong with the ABS function?
I also suspect the fork joint going into the geared hubs which are hidden under a plastic sleeve to be making the noise.
Has anybody of you come across this problem??

what kind of wheels do you have? aluminum with the cap for the ctis?

if so, i would check to see if there is dirt under the cap. that could be the cause of the noise

Yep, Alu with caps.
This was the first thing I checked.

Could be caused from everything from rocks in the treads, nail/screw head to....
If you have checked to make sure the center caps are tightly screwed in one other thing that I know of that can cause that sound is the half shaft bolts backing out. Check to make sure they are all tight.

The sound is like you are running a stick over a metal fence like we did as kids.
The idea with the bolts sticking out sound good. Where are these bolts located?

On the inboard and outboard flange of the half shaft.

Outboard I'd guess. I jacked the car up and had all 4 wheels free spinning hoping to locate the noise. To my dissapointment no noise at all. I could them spin by hand and even pulled a gear in with the engine running. Nothing. The noise only seem to appear when under the weight of the car. And yes, the noise is still there!

Did you check your CV boots for any holes or rips?

Scimitar6 Feb 2, 2010 02:23 AM

Hi 3hummers, excuse my ignorance but what are "CV boots"?

If you look at your half shafts ( axles ) there will be a rubber boot on each end. Look for rips or tears. A half shaft starting to go can make a clicking noise. Might do a lube job while you are under the truck.
