On five or six occasions the brakes have seemingly locked at very low speeds, but only pulling in or out of a parking spot. Locked to the extent the tires chirped a little. No ABS light, nothing. Any ideas...I have never had issues with the 4WD settings (hi or low). My shop is puzzled. Hoping someone here has some thoughts.

 

describe how they "locked"?? did you need to push the gas more while turning?...lock mode??
tires squeal on some smooth pavement because the wide tires are turning at two speeds from the inside to the outside, figure the math!!
mine do it on smooth asphalt. oh my steering locks at full turn left or right and i need to pull it back, it does not center itself because of the sharp turning radius.

 

Sounds like the T case is in 4HI Lock.

When I get to work, in the morning, it sounds like I'm racing through the parking structure since the tires will chirp/squeal on tight turns on the smooth pavement/concrete. And mine also does not re-center once I get past a certain point.

 

Thanks to those of you who have chimed in...a couple of things. The feeling is similar to the E Brake being on while trying to move at low speed...you feel a definite resistance. When this happens the H3 is barely able to move. It's not a normal chirping from being on asphalt, etc. Besides, you only get that sound if you are moving pretty quick. At low speeds even in a tight circle I never have the "chirping" sound. To my knowledge this has never been run in 4Lo or 4Hi. So, the idea it may be engaging into 4Hi somehow is intriguing.

I am hoping someone else has had the experience and can direct me to where to look for the fix.

 

my bet is if you drive in a perfect straight line you have none of this??

its in 4hi lock.
in 4 low the rpms go way up and you go nowhere.

Yup, sounds like it is somehow in 4HI Lock. Try cycling it through the modes: 4HI, 4HI Lock, 4LO Lock, back again.

BTW, depending on tires and surface, you can get the squeal even at extremely low speeds.

 

just thought of this.
braking action in lock mode.
in lock, i parked on a hill and turned the wheel to hard right.
turned it off and got out.
the h3 never moved! in lock mode tires stick even in grass.
they all need to turn at different speeds when turning.
