BAD Piston Slap? 2010 Hummer H3 Alpha
2 Attachment(s)
Please give me your opinion and some advice,
This is my 2010 Hummer H3 Alpha with a case of "piston slap" according to GM (I just got it back from the dealer). It has 2500 miles on it and has been slapping since the 1000 mile mark, getting worse over time. The sound does not go away in 15-20 seconds after start up and is very loud as heard in the following 90 second video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlDDd1H1CXU Here is a copy of the service report. |
Sounds a lot like mine though not quite as pronounced. I had the Hummer dealer and 2 Chevrolet dealers tell me that it was not out of the ordinary for that engine. My I5 was much quieter. As long as it is not going to fly apart I am not too concerned about. It's more embarassing than anything else. I hope somone else on the forum that has had experience with the 5.3 will chime in.

My 2009 H3 Championship 5.3 L LH8 V8 with 5000 miles is very quiet and sounds exactly as it should.

UPDATE:
I took it to a different Chevrolet dealer and it got transferred back to my original dealer per GM's orders. Dealer replaced the rod bearings last week and re-assembled, still knocks. They said the piston bores, main bearings, etc all looked perfect and they have no idea why it is knocking, just really bad piston slap is the best guess. My dealer is handling it very well and doing everything they can to make sure I am taken care of. They are putting a new engine in it now. |
piston slap? like valve slap were the piston hits the valve? have the dealer fly cut the pistons maybe? Im pretty sure ive seen motors that put a hole through the piston because of that. Maybe the push rods and valves need to be ajusted

No piston slap is VERY common on GM v8's. Read this on piston slap. It's actually not BAD for the vehicle, it just sounds terrible
http://www.pistonslap.com/whatisit.htm Apparently the OP had bigger issues than piston slap though. |
