arb awning swingarm
Heres alittle writeup on the arb awning swing arm i made. Its not my idea but a freds arm knockoff. I ordered my awning from timco at expedition hardware. I gather material for a few days and when i received my awning i had 3 days before we went on vacation to padre island national seashore. The swing arm is made with 1x2" med steel rectangle tubing that slips inside 1x 21/2' aluminum c chanel. To mount it to the rack i used conduit hangers that where pd coated from my roofrack build attached to the rack rails and added alittle more support with a bolt mounted to some cut down 11/2" steel angle iron mounted to the rack base mounts. For the base plate i used 3/16" steel plate and used mostly 11/2"x 3/16" steel flate bar hammered out to make a double shear pin hinge and used 5/8" bolts for my pivots. I used tefflon washers on the pivot points for smoother movement and to keep vibration down. I made up some spring loaded pins like the freds arm but had to mount them on top because my rack set pretty low to the roof about 2to 21/2" just no room to work them. I decided not to use them was afraid with any rough terrain up and down motion might work the pins up out of the drilled holes causing a serious situation on the road, so i oppted for 3/8" bolts and black plastic turn handle. To mount the aluminum c chanel to the awning i used 1/8"x 11/2" steel flatbar drilled for the top chanel on the awning and drilled and bolted though the center of the aluminum c chanel. I painted with rusto hammered black. I have about $60 in material and stainless steel hardware
