Hello Everyone! :-)

I have a 2006 H3 5-cyl model. These last few weeks have been snowy around here and recently, I used my 4-wheel drive to get around without consequence. At some point, the 4WD switch decided not to make the switch at all and it nowseems I'm stuck in 4-high all the time. Even if I physically push the 4-wheel automatic button (to get it out of 4-high), it still seems to be in 4WD all the time.

The reasons I can sense thisare because when I turn for example, I get the slip of the tires like you normally get in 4WD. Also, when going in reverse, I get the slipping and it feels like if I go too fast, the drive train's gonna break apart. My turning radius (both forward and reverse), completly stinks and I struggle to get into a parking spot usually. I find I have to do a two or three point turn just to do this simple activity. Lastly, the gas mileage is terrible - definately a sign of being in 4WD!

Any thoughts? Anyone have this problem in the past and know if it's simply a matter of a faulty switch? Is it possible I'm facing something other than 4WD issues and it's in fact a drive train problem or the differential?

You mean stuck in 4WD Lock? (I figure you know H3s are FT AWD, selectable to hi and lo lock?) Could be, the T Case actuators do crap out occaisionally. Go have it looked at. Good luck

 

Yea, I mean stuck in 4WD LOCK. I appreciate your response and help. I had intentions to take it to the dealer but thought I'd check here first for any similar experiences.

I have the same problem! Stuck in four wheel high lock. It has been snowy here(surprise its canada) Worked fine until last week. Not the switches because all the lights work and will go into low lock. Tried all of the sugestions made in the manual no luck and no warrenty- just over 51000 miles.
Any ideas???

 

Good news is the T Case actuator switch is only about $173.00. Most reputable transmission shops should be able to do the replacement if you want to avoid the steelership.

Don't forget to check with GM warranty. If it's only 1000 miles out of warranty they will frequently cover it or cover the part and you pay thelabor or vice versa. It doesn't hurt to ask. Call you dealer's Service Manager and ask him to call the GM rep and inquire, or better yet get the GM rep's name and # and ask yourself.If that doesn't work, then call GM's warranty department and ask the same thing. If that doesn't work then you'll have to take care of it yourself.

I have just gone through this. Only 61k miles on it. It will likely be 1 of 2 possible things. 1. T case actuator ~ $200 parts and labor (No biggy). Or 2, melted plastic locking fork in T case. $24 part but must pull T case and replace (6-7hour job) $650-$750 at local shop $1000 at dealer. This is a serious design flaw. Shame on Hummer! Note to Hummer - good T Case gearing + cheap *** plastic support parts, still = BAD design/T case.
