Default 2008 hummer H3 won't crank and start

Hi,

I have a 2008 Hummer H3 and just died on the road and we tried to start it but to no avail. We brought it to a garage and the mechanic told us that we need to replace the engine cause the bearing seized and it will cost us more than 5,000. Right now it was towed back to our garage and maybe it will sit there for a while until i can figure out the problem. Anyone have any idea what causing the problem.

I don't understand which bearing are they talking about? Is it electrical failure or mechanical one? As I understand your truck died because of electrical problem. May be it's alternator failed and drained your battery completely. But if it's a mechanical problem, so it could be another story! But don't change the engine right away! Try to investigate, what kind of problem it is.

The mechanic said that it is the crankshaft bearing that seized. We suspect that it is just one of the sensor.

I was thinking about crankshaft too, but in this case your engine couldn't be cranked by starter and will be really seized. Is it possible to rotate crankshaft with your starter or your engine doesn't make any revolutions at all?

First, have it towed to a different mechanic and have it diagnosed.

Second, 5k for a motor swap sounds really really high.

Agree completely with Tainter... at least with regard to the cost of a replacement engine. That sounds a bit expensive. But before we get ahead of ourselves, ask the mechanic how he determined that it was the crank bearings at fault. When you try to start it do you hear the starter solenoid "clicking", e.g., trying to engage the flywheel? If you could hear that, then there is possibly something wrong deeper in. Ask him if he removed the starter and tried to rotate the flywheel by hand... that is the only way to be sure other than going for the timing chain side and rotating the nut on the crank sprocket.

Edit: Just saw your response re. the starter. That is not good sir. It sounds like he diagnosed this correctly, but it would not hurt to ask him if he tried to rotate the crank by hand... just to be sure.

I had the same thing happen and it was the rocker arm that was cracked.
