Long story short financially let my Tacoma truck go in bankruptcy bought a 2007 h3 Hummer 5 speed manual trans as is. 114k miles
I noticed with heat on, sweet smell, not losing coolant, no drips anywhere, none under passenger floor board, marked coolant take to pay attention.
i do hvac so not good with autos.
I have a clunking noise in my front right tire area, can feel it through floor not consistent usually making left turns. Checked axel shafts everything looks okay older top control arm bushing though.
while under truck noticed the cv joint boot is cracked on the drive shaft going towards the rear of the truck about midway down from the front.
Hello,
I'm gonna say the front drive shaft joint is in need of repair/replace.
The sweet smell may be a crappy radiator.
The clunky front end will need some hands on verification.
It’s just strange the heat smell, it only happens when the heat is on, if I turn to cold without even turning on the AC it stops. It was so bad driving I had to shut the heat off and open the windows. I’ve inspected the radiator and can’t find any fluids leaking, obviously haven’t looked at the heater core, and I don’t know if the heater core went before I bought it and was replaced and just burning off residue anti freeze. I’m hoping by having the coolant tank marked I can see if I’m loosing any coolant. I know the heater core is like $65 but I know it’s a pain to replace. I’d replace the drive shaft CV joint myself but I don’t have a lift, so it’s take quite long crawling underneath just to fix that so I may have a shop do that. The clunking and with the cv joint I just get worried driving it and Tight on cash with everything going on. I just figured at 114k miles I could make the thing last to 160k miles in 4-5 years give or take with minimal problems or hoping atleast. I don’t have a $600 car payment anymore so I can spend some money towards it and it’s more a local driven vehicle I have a work van for work.
Overall happy with the vehicle and cant believe the amount of space for car seats and such compared to my double cab Tacoma. It reminds me of my Fj cruiser I had but more space and no suicide doors.
the front drive shaft is most likely your noise i would do that first. you can buy a cardone cv joint to replace it your self. within a hour or two. with just hand tools there is a right up on here on how to do it. you dont need a hole new drive shaft. or remove the drive shaft and then take it to a shop and allso replace the u joint on the opasit end of the shaft
Well seems my right CV axle has play in it a little clicking but noticed bad bushings on both sides and now really worried.
The right on is cracked but still touches comes off frame the left one doesn’t touch at all probably 2” gap. Any thoughts?
Those are progressive dampeners and yours are SHOT! They can be removed with a screwdriver. $15 each on eBay. Part #15783030
Front prop shaft can easily be removed with an 11mm for the front fasteners and a 10mm for the rear fasteners. $240 for a Cardone replacement unit. Don't forget to chalk the tires before removing the prop shaft.
Prop shaft and dampeners are about the easiest R&R on an H3 besides brake pads. What the heck do you need a lift for? Get on you back and take it out. Same with the progressive dampeners. Floor Jack, wheel chocks(blocks of wood, etc.) and a screw driver is all you need.
Heater core is a different story. That is not a novice mechanic R&R. But it can be done with a basic set of hand tools.
Well turns out the antifreeze smell went away when running heat, could have been a bad heater core in the past or the used car dealer dumped in leak stop, I didn’t lose any anti freeze but will keep an eye on it. I have a friend doing the cv front drive cv joint and replacing my passenger side CV axle for $250. I ordered the the bump stops or progressive dampeners from GM and I will replace those when they arrive. Hopefully no clunk noise and ride smooths out some. Funny I never thought I’d buy a 11 year old vehicle, I’ve always traded in vehicles before I had normal wear issues.
