Default 1996 Hummer H1 right rear hub?

Anyone got a source to buy a rebuilt or used right rear hub with all the fixings inside?

My half shaft retaining bolt came out and caused my upper and lower gears to grind up slightly on the inside corners. The dealer said they want to replace the whole hub rather then replace the upper and lower gears, seals and barrings...

Any thoughts out there???

hi, It's been my experience that the geared hubs massively over built and in the fifteen years of racing H1's that I was involved in, we NEVER had a failure and routine maintenence eventually disappeared due to a lack of need. I don't know how bad the little bit of grinding it got is but I would depending your financial situation vs practical desires are. but if you clean it well and inspect the bearings and probably all are fine, be aware of how much metal is in the box and you might want to put in a lower axle seal to avoid having to come back and redo it later. unless more than 1/3 of the gear teeth are ground off I would bet you would be fine. Remember if you ever have a problem while out just drop the half shaft (and may want to drop both sides due to weird braking effects) and lock the transfer case and motor home in 2 wheel drive. I haven't looked on my parts cargo container but I'm sure I have a bunch of geared hubs but no idea which corners (there are only 2) and what years they would be. hope this is of some value.

Thanks, the dealer showed me the hub itself was all grinded up as well. The hole that the half shaft retaining bolt goes through was opened up to big, so they found a rebuilt hub and spindle for me. Its all good now. But can you believe they (Tunsin Buik GMC) then said they were too busy to look into my other mechanical issues and told me to come pickup my Hummer. And worse at pick-up they told me my front brake calipers were loose and some bolts cross threaded! Sending me home in an unsafe car to drive...

FYI: I have some good parts left from my old rear hub if anyone needs them...

i worked on the vehicle for you. i too have been working on hummers for over 20 years, have been racing them off road for14 years and thegeared hub was missing pieces and damaged the housing so replacement was the only option. sending you home in a unsafe vehicle is not true either, you drove it in to the shop unsafe with the geared hub falling apart which was unsafe. when you asked me to look over your vehicle and let you know what else i see, i did that. also you asked me to look at a electrical issue and said if it was too much over my head not to touch it and you have a good electrical guy that can look at it. right now we have a two week waiting list to get into the shop for work and i pushed people back to get your vehicle in as fast as i could and even came in on a saturday on my day off to finish it so you could pick it up that day.sorry that our service fell below what you were expecting but i did the best i could with the time i had.

haha I love social media. You cant hide behind inaccurate information for long. When I read the posts, I knew something was fishy because Tustin has a HUGE reputation for being the countrys best. haha

Tustin is the country's best and Mike is the best of the best when it comes to H1s. As busy as they stay they don't have time for bad attitudes. If you think you know more than they do then fix your truck yourself.

Wow, first. Thanks Mike. My hub is sounding good and I am that much closer to getting this H1 running. Even though I brought it to the dealer to not "get it close", but to get it DONE. Regardless, busy is busy, if I was told that, I would have dealt with that.

Now as for the electrical issue. I based that suggestion on a past experience with YOU. I brought an H2 in and the power window switch was not working. I was charged $300 or so, for service to tell me they did not know why or how to fix it... I then took it to Hot Wire in Santa Ana and in about 15 minutes he had it fixed and charged me $75! Not too mention I also have a Bentley and at the dealer they broke my door latch, then quoting me $800 to fix it. Saying I needed a new $300 electric latch. I then took that car to Hotwire and for $100 he fixed it perfectly again. So yes, I have a really good electrical guy... this is true... But now I need a really good H1 mechanic that is not too busy to fix my truck...

Now to answer my post as a mechanic saying "sending you home in a unsafe vehicle is not true either, you drove it in to the shop unsafe with the geared hub falling apart which was unsafe."

This is even more shocking. At time of pick up, I was told my front brake caliper bolts are lose and some cross threaded. Why not tighten them? Brakes can be life threatening...right?

So if a women with 5 children brings her car in for a oil change, and you happen to notice a wheel is coming lose. You think by mentioned that to her when she is leaving is OK? "Because she drove in like that" and you don't have time to help her tighten it? I surely hope not...

Well regardless, I do agree with this forum. You are the local expert on H1's and by having one. I only hope you are not too busy when I need anything in the future...

hello wfive, when i said it was not a unsafe vehicle to drive home due to the caliper mounting brackets being loose and the bolt being cross threaded is that the brakes would not have failed or fallen off while driving, it was that they are making a popping noise when you stop and then take off. in order for me to tighten the bolts i would have to remove the half shafts, calipers, rotors and the axel assembly flanges to tight the caliper mounting brackets. i was afraid to remove the cross treaded bolt because if it broke off inside the mount it would take some time to fix it. i also tighten the pitman arm which was about to pop off the steering gear ( which would have been unsafe ) and noted a worn idler arm. i also tighted all the loose halfshaft bolts that were finger tight and i torqued them to factory specs. i agree with you that i would not put my wife and kids in a vehicle that was unsafe to drive and i have had a lot of people that have had to tow the vehicles out or i worked for free fixing leaking brake lines or just fix things that were loose because i don`t want to have anyone sitting on the side of the road waiting for help or put their family in danger.good luck with your project, i am here if you need help or advise on how to fix stuff, hopefully i will get caught up soon and will have the time to fix every hummer that pulls up in a quicker amout of time. thanks again for your business,
mike s.

Sounds like you live, eat, sleep and love HUMMERS...

Ya see, you worry me that if all that was lose and coming off, what else could there be? The guy I bought this from was an obvious moron!

Being that you are too busy, do you recommend anyone or any shop that can go through this an just fix anything it may need (and know what they are doing)?

I know one thing is the AC is not blowing cold. Could need recharge or have leak?

Thanks.
