I have an 07 H3 with a little less then 60K miles. The other day I was hearing a slight grinding only at low RPMs or coming to a stop. We put my truck on the lift...I pulled the plug and the differential was almost dry. Im not sure how long it had been leaking. What little oil was left didnt seem to have any metal flake in it. I filled the oil back up and took it out and I can still hear a grinding sound. Its not real loud but its definitely still there. Does it sound like my differential is totally shot? Has anyone had to replace one? Im sure it isnt cheap.

I'd say that if you've refilled and it is still making any grinding noise, there is likely damage to the gearset. You need to open it up and have a look.

 

It isnt grinding all of the time. Its only when Im slowing down to come to a stop it hits a point where it grinds. Also when I take off it grinds a little until I get it up to speed. After I get going it seems to drive fine. Im also thinking that there is damage to the gears. I just moved to Chicago from KC and had to leave the H3 behind at my brothers. Im going to have him drive it to the shop to get it diagnosed. Im hoping for the best but expecting the worst.
