Well after wanting a GOBI rack 3 years now but not willing to spend $1,2XX I finally done something about. My buddy has been telling me to make my own for fair to long so I picked up all that I need and got to work!!!

Pick up 36' (way more then I needed but the rest is for the next project) of 1 1'4" 40 grade pipe and expanded metal.

It comes out to 5'6" long and 48" wide and at 212lbs. I think it came out as planed.

Looks great! May need to look into doing that as well. How did you mount it to the rails?

The mount on the rack 4" long and 1" with with a flat piece of metal in the track with threaded holes. Pretty much both the mounts sandwich the rack in the middle for a solid link.

Here's some better photos.

It is a good looking rack but the weight, Holy Krap! Might have been cheaper than a Gobi but it's 325% eavier!

Just a heads up; You can only carry 38lbs up there now vs a Gobi with a 200lb carry capacity? You know the rails you have attached to are only held in with riv-nuts, right? They have been known to rip right through the roof with heavy loads.

Notice: Loading cargo on the
roof rack that weighs more than
113 kg (250 lbs) may
damage the vehicle.

Thanks for the heads up and I'm tracking that problem plus I have a fix for it.

If you don't mind me asking what were your measurements for your rack. It looks great by the way.

Width came out to 49" right on top of the tracks and length was 68". I'm 5'6" and I can lay on it so I can sleep up there in a sleeping bag.

You can take the roof, Id rather sleep in the seat...!

Nice looking rack though.

What's your plan to solve the weight issue? I ask because I'm going to build one soon, I'm trying to compare as many ideas as possible.
