It's definitely the latter to make it absolutely clear.

Bad alternator = replace alternator.
To you, bad alternator = ask inept question about alternator life on an 10+ year old vehicle.

inept = generally awkward or clumsy; haplessly incompetent.

Some are bad out of the new box, others could go 200,000 miles with no issue.....

Many fail due to weak battery, another failure can be caused from jump starting another vehicle. My '07 alternator is still oem, however I've replaced my battery around every 3yrs, and I've never jump started another vehicle. It's important to check battery regularly.

My alternator starts off a 14.2V for the first 5 mins. of driving, then drops off to 12.9V?

Try cleaning connections battery & alternator+check resting voltage on the battery (min 12.5+)

My original alternator lasted ~216,000 miles. I recently replaced it with the same OE unit and all is good again. Installation is a bit of a pain, but definitely doable if you're reasonably handy with tools. .
