Default Transfer case?

Just replaced the front axles on my 2006 H3 with a 150k on it. Mechanic gave it a test drive and it drove horrible. He checked the transfer case and said it was black and shiny (metal shavings) which might be part of the problem. I never noticed anything with gear shifting in 4wd but now I do notice some binding when I turn and some chatter when going up hill. Worth a rebuild or buy new or could it be something else going on.

Hmmmm.

So, b4 the replacement axles there was no problems?
I'm thinking that they installed incorrect axles.
Black, shiny is a very odd description.
