I did my service on my differentials. I ended up using alot more oil than I has predicted. I used six quarts to fill the front and back.

I have a question though, If they were not filled up all the way, how many miles would it go before there was a failure?

Sorry I titled it transfer case.......I get them backwards all the time.

 

I am honestly not sure what the capacity is, however I'm going to read between the lines of your post and assume that for whatever reason you did not fill them completely. I have NO idea how long they'll last without the proper amont of lube, but why risk it? Fill them up.

 

are you sure you are using quarts and not pints?
2 pints = 1 quart
im sure if you were using quarts, you would have noticied a ton over over flowing happening once you hit the top of the fill port.
i know the stuff is thick, but its not that thick.

worst case, take your fill port off and let the excess drain out. it will eventually level out to a point that is going to be very close to maximum fill capacity for the diff.

if you have custom diff covers, remember you need to add additional oil depending on makers specs. most are .5 pt

when i fill up my diffs, i fill it till it starts coming out of the fill port.

 

Well the oil I used is the regular gear oil bottles. Its a quart a bottle. $19.99 a bottle for the royal purple.

I know the rear is full and the front I am dead sure. It kept running out. I would wipe it below the fill hole and it would keep oozing.

I guess I am just freaked out. I did an oil change and changed the oil in the differentials. When I get home after driving it every day, I smell burnt oil from the front. I look everywhere and cannot find a leak so I am freaked out.

I even went down the highway the other day for a hour with no problems from the differentials. I just smell that burnt oil smell some coming from the front.

 

Cool, I understand. My best guess -- and only a guess -- is that some that spilled out and was clinging to the diff probably dripped off and flew back and hit something hot while driving around. My opinion is that you're probably OK.
